Jodinger Singh about the Lancer after the win in the Safari 1974:

To win the Safari your machinery must have the best performance and superior handling, aswell as strength, ease of maintenance and simple design. This victory will remain a vivid memory throughout my life and the Lancer will become a longlife friend. I was lucky to drive such a reliable machine.

Singh repeated the succes one more time by winning the Safari Rally in 1976, leaving behind the Lancia Stratos in 2nd place wich would be crowned World Champion that same year.

Meanwhile, a Japanese rising star named Kenjiro Shinozuka made his entry in rallying with, what else, a Lancer 1600 GSR.

The Lancer also dominated the 1977 Bandama Rally, beating the famous Peugeot’s 203, 403, 404 and 504 on their own playground. Almost 15 years went by before the first evolution of the Lancer GSR made his entry in the WRC, replacing the Galant VR-4 in 1992.
